The Founding Committee Responds

This is the first Pub Table exchange for The Everyman's Game — five founding voices reacting to the arguments raised elsewhere in this series about VAR, offside, subjective fouls, hydration stoppages, and injury-time abuse. As with the rest of the founding content, these are placeholder draft responses, written to show the shape of the format. They will be replaced with the committee's actual positions before launch. Members are identified by initials until each gives permission to publish their full name; only David Rush's name is public by his own choice.

David Rush — Founder / editor / systems view

Placeholder response. "My instinct is that most of what we're calling a 'VAR problem' is really a systems-design problem — we bolted a forensic review tool onto laws that were never written for forensic review. Fix the laws' tolerances first, and the technology gets a lot less controversial."

C.D. — Founding committee / coaching voice

Placeholder response. "From the touchline, the injury-stoppage piece is the one that actually changes matches. I've seen it flip momentum more than any offside call. Whatever we land on editorially, it needs to reflect what coaches see happen in real time, not just what looks bad on television."

Placeholder response. "I'd push back gently on the hydration-break piece — broadcasters and commercial partners aren't the enemy here, and there's a version of scheduled welfare stoppages that doesn't have to be cynical. But I agree the criteria need to be transparent, not just assumed reasonable."

Placeholder response. "As a supporter, the offside argument is the one that hits hardest. Nothing kills the joy of a goal faster than watching it chalked off for a millimeter nobody in the stadium could ever have seen. Whatever changes, protect that feeling."

Placeholder response. "I've watched this game for decades, and the thing I want protected most is the emotional honesty of the moment — the roar, the disappointment, the momentum. Anything that delays or dilutes that moment needs a very good reason to exist."
